PLEASE...CAN ANYONE HELP US?? We have a one month old baby boy who is
currently on a ventilator, an IV, and is being dripped food through a
tube to his stomach.
Bobby was flown via helicopter from Kitchener Waterloo Hospital to
McMaster University Health Center after experiencing several periods when
he would stop breathing for no apparent reason and turn shades of white
and blue. He had to be continually resuscitated. Occasionally there
would be mild seizures preceading the cessation of breathing. There is
also a some cephalic swelling. (Not hydrocephalus or encephalitis).
He has undergone EEG's, CAT scans, blood tests, x-rays,
respiratory massage, as well as a couple of spinal lumbar punctures.
He has been given sedatives, (phenobarbitol), antibiotics (erythromycin),
anti-convulsant medication (phenytoin) as well as shock medication
The LP has shown an "abnormality" of the cerebral spinal fluid.
The problem now is the infectious disease specialist is working as fast
as he can to try to identify the "virus" or whatever may be the cause.
The x-rays have also shown a partial collapse of one lung. The doctors
believe this to secondary to the primary cause.
Most of the major viruses (such as herpes and meningitis) have failed to
grow cultures. We are now looking for less know organisms or mechanisms.
QUESTION: Has anyone ever had experience with the type of
symptoms Bobby's exhibiting?? Has anyone ever had any familiarity with
any of these "lesser known cerebro-spinal agents"?? We believe if we can
identify the virus we may be on the road to recovery.
I will be going back to the hospital in Hamilton in the morning
and will be away from my mailbox for a few days but would greatly
appreciate any help! If anyone knows of any other newsgroups or
Listservs that would be appropriate for this plea, please forward the
message on. ....thanks...Mike
