Virulence

I think that Derek has made some very cogent observations about virulence
and natural selection. I would therefore like to pose the following
question. Could virulence help a parasite invade a new territory and
become established, then be selected against as the conquest suceeds? It
seems that this might be an adaptation strategy that could be analyzed in
migratory populations of hosts.
