Plasmodium in NW Vietnam

Folks,

I have a colleague (Dr. Al Mennega - mennega at dordt.edu)who
asked me to post this to the parasitology newsgroup. He is
working with refugees who have relatives in the North West
corner of Vietnam (Dien Bieun Phu). The refugee community is
concerned about the water supply in Vietnam since the local well
(close to a river) becomes polluted and causes sickness and
death. They are considering trying to help get a well dug in
the village, but don't want this well or water pooling around it
to complicate the health problems.

One thing that one worries about if one increases puddling
water in the village is increasing the incidence of malaria. He
would appreciate hearing from someone that knows something about
malaria in that part of Vietnam. Is it resistant to any or all
drugs? What Plasmodium species are involved? What is the
geographical distribution of mosquitoes in that area?
