According to the Merck Manual the standard treatment for amebiasis is
according to severity of infection. In mild cases a single drug such as
iodoquinol, paromomycin or diloxanide furoate is recommended.
More severe cases dictate the addition of Metronidazol, followed by
iodoquinol.

Amebiasis tends to recur so stools should be examined 1, 3, 6 and even
12 months after treatment or more frequently if symptoms recur. However
recurrence of GI symtpoms does not necessarily dictate re-treatment
unless the protozoan is found in the stool (E. histolytica).
