This is far from being a settled issue. I would estimate that there
are about an equal numbers of paper in the literature that say it is 
a pathogen as papers that say it is not. It may not cause invasive or
fatal disease but that does not mean it is a commensal. It is also
clear from the recent literature that human Blastocystis is actually
two or more distinct organisms - this may in part explain the variable
results being reported with respect to its role as a pathogen.
