A student here is off to Madagasgar for 5 months in falciparum country.
P.f. is chloroquine resistant there.
She was in Madagasgar 3 yrs ago and was on Mefloquine for 3.5 mo.
She was then on Chloroquine for 3 months in South America 2.5 yrs ago.
This past summer she was on Mefloquine for 3.5 months.

She is concerned, now, about cumulative effects on her liver etc and the
implications which she has heard about re child/bearing etc for 2 yrs

Insofar as she is facing 6 months of mefloquine starting in Jan 97 and
then another 6 months of it in Jan 98.

Are there any alternatives? She can't take Fansidar due to intolerance
to sulfa drugs.

If there are no US-FDA approved alternatives, are there alternatives
sanctioned in say the UK or Canada?

What about Halofantrine or Artesunatre?
