try van Wijk and Krause, Planta 189: 359-368 (1993) the gist of which is
that electron donation to PSII is inhibited by acidic conditions in the
lumen, reducing the reduction of PSII which otherwise would lead to the
formation of the reactive singlet oxygen

delta pH in the lumen is caused by a number of mechanisms, which can be
considered more or less photosynthetic: water-splitting by
the OEC, cyclic electron transport, and linear electron transport, where the
electron acceptors can be NADP+, oxygen, nitrite, sulfate and thioredoxin

i should point out that these are my interpretation of the available articles,
and thus stand to be corrected, if neccesary

by the way, i am a durbanite myself - will any of you from the U of N be
attending the PS congress in montpellier?
