Enclosed please find an advertisement for a post-doctoral position (jointly
between Tony Crofts and myself) open to US Citizens and US Permanent
Residents. Please feel free to correspond with both of us (gov at uiuc.edu;
a-crofts at uiuc.edu) and send formal application to Professor Colin Wraight
(at the address given in the advertisement below).

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION,at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign,is available for a person with a doctorate degree and
appropriate training and research experience to engage in a
multidisciplinary project dealing with the topic of "How Plants Cope with
Excess Light". The work is to be jointly supervised by Tony Crofts and
Govindjee, two of the many faculty members at the UIUC on the
interdisciplinary training grant, supported by the National Science
Foundation. The research will involve biophysical, molecular engineering and
biochemical studies of the mechanism of photoprotection by plants and algae.
In particular, we are interested in
constructing (in E. coli) site-directed mutants of the inner/core chlorophyll
protein complexes (e.g., CP-24; CP-26; CP-29), and (in Chlamydomonas) of D1,
D2, CP-43 and CP-47, for this study. Biophysical measurements will include
state-of-the art difference absorption, CD, and fluorescence-lifetime
measurements on complexes reconstituted in vitro. Biochemical work will be
on setting up an in vitro system to study excitation transfer and exciton
dumping in supercomplexes of the photosynthetic apparatus reconstituted from
mutated or native CPs, and native partners isolated from higher plants.
Candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents of the USA.
Applications must include a personal vitae; a brief statement of research
interests and experience, and candidates are encouraged to correspond
through e-mail prior to submission of an application (a-crofts at uiuc.edu and
gov at uiuc.edu (Govindjee at rsbs-central.anu.edu.au till May 21, 1997)). Three
letters of recommendation must be sent directly to the address provided
below (PLEASE mark them as CROFTS-GOVINDJEE position): Professor Colin
Wraight, Director, Integrative Photosynthesis
Trainning Grant, Department of Plant Biology, 190 ER Madigan Laboratory,
1201 West Gregory Drive, Urbana, IL 61801, USA.

The University of Illinois is an equal opportunity educator and employer and
specifically encourages applications from women and minorities.
