STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC MEMBRANES

                                   Advanced Summer School
                        Lectures and Practical Demonstrations
                                   For Training Junior Scientists
                  August 23 - September 1, 1998, Szeged, Hungary.

Organized by Z. Gombos, A.J. Hoff and P. Maroti
                                    under the auspices of the
European Science Foundation, Biophysics of Photosynthesis ESF
Programme and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. At the Biological
Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in collaboration
                            with Attila Jozsef University, Szeged.

The major aim of the school is to demonstrate the use of modern
biophysical and biochemical techniques in solving biological problems,
specifically with regards to structural aspects of lipids in
membranes. We will show that spectroscopic techniques combined with
methods of molecular biology and biochemistry yield valuable
information on the function and regulation of biomembranes.
Photosynthetic membranes represent a good model system to demonstrate
the correlation between functioning and structure of biomembranes.

Lectures and practical demonstrations will cover the following topics.
Physical principles of some basic spectroscopic methods: Magnetic
resonance techniques (EPR). Polarization spectroscopy (CD, LD),
vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR, resonance Raman), transient optical
spectroscopy, fluorescence induction, fluorescence anisotropy.
Biochemical methods: Lipid analyzis of isolated membranes (GC, TLC).
Molecular biological methods: Cyanobacterial gene expression (RNA
isolation, Northern blot, cyanobacterial transformation). Structural
analyses of biomembranes: Microscopic techniques (EM, LSM)
