Dear Friends:

By now, you have heard about Dr. Ilya Vassiliev's tragic death. Ilya
was hit by a car on July 31st and died of his injuries on August
10th. He leaves his wife, Elena Vassiliev, and their 15-year-old
son, Ilya.

Ilya made many scientific contributions to the field of
photosynthesis, both from his research at Moscow State University and
his research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of
Nebraska, Pennsylvania State University, and the Georgia Institute of
Technology. Ilya obtained his Ph.D. in Biophysics from Moscow State
University in 1988. He came to the U.S. in 1993 and spent time in
the laboratories of Dr. Paul Falkowski and Dr. John Golbeck, before
accepting a position at Signature Bioscience in CA. He joined my
group at Georgia Tech in the fall of 2003. He was an outstanding
scientist and a good friend and colleague to all of us who worked
with him.

To alleviate his family's financial difficulties, Ilya's friends at
Georgia Tech have established the Ilya Vassiliev Memorial Fund. It
is our intention that these funds will be used to help with any
immediate financial needs and with his son's college education. Our
goal is to raise $50,000 by soliciting contributions from Ilya's
friends and coworkers.

You are invited to contribute to this fund by making your gift
payable to the Ilya Vassiliev Memorial Fund and sending it to the
Georgia Institute of Technology, College of Sciences, Office of the
Dean, Attn: Development, Atlanta, GA 30332-0365.
