Interdisciplinary Courses

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with interdisciplinary courses.
There is a distinct move in higher education to espouse interdisciplinary
learning environments. If you have had positive or negative experiences, would
you please post? One problem that I envision is the turf battles that may go
on -- disciplinary departments are notoriously protective of ownership.
Another might be that a particular major does not "recognize" an
interdisciplinary course as being adequate to count toward that major. Any
experience with any of these issues?
