Beating your trees

Famous gardener, Jerry Baker, recomended on a PBS show that you should
beat the trunks of your trees with a short length of rubber hose or a
rolled-up newspaper to stimulate sap flow and get better flowering and
fruiting. Sounds strange to me. Does this have any basis in fact?
