Stebbins is the one author that I am aware of that attempted to look at the
circumstances under which monocots evolved. Check out Stebbins, G.L. 1974.
Flowering Plants: Evolution above the species level. Belknap Press of
Harvard University Press. Pp. 312 starts a chapter on the evolution of the
Monocotyledons. He states that the evolution of monocots involved a major
adaptive shift to wet (but not aquatic) conditions and explains the basis of
his opinion.
