It only covers vascular plants, and might be too much for sophomores, but 
I still highly recommend "Morphology and Evolution of Vascular Plants" by 
Gifford and Foster.  My 3rd edition is 1989, don't know if there is a 4th 
ed.  Anyway, the ISBN is 0-7167-1946-0.
