monocot diversity

The impression one gets from monocots is that they not only represent less
than a fourth of the known angiosperm species, but also are a fairly
uniform group compared to the dicots. Texts allude to this, but I find
little discussion of why this should be true. Any ideas out there or
possible suggestions for further reading? Thank you.--Lenore
