Several researchers have asked whether bark characteristics might
impact colonization by vines (structural parasites). While there is
evidence that some tree species are more likely to be climbed than
others, Talley et al (ECOLOGY 77:1277-1285) actually found
shagbark hickory to have more poison ivy vines than expected.
This relatively recent paper also provide a good literature review.
