bald cypress knee function?

Has anyone come across research that provides good evidence for the
function(s) of the knees of bald cypress (Taxodium distichum)?

There seems to be no agreement but several hypotheses including aeration of
roots (a pneumatophore), mechanical support, nutrient storage and vegetative
reproduction.
