Soil pH, alkalinity?

Plant-Edders,

We're trying to monitor our greenhouse conditions to keep pests down, 
and we were told we need to keep a close eye on soil pH and 
alkalinity. There seem to be lots of ways to measure both of these, 
ranging from instruments costing hundreds of dollars to 
color-indicating tapes. Do any of you have recommendations about 
methods you favor, or methods to avoid? Any instruments you 
particularly recommend (or not)?
