Colchicine

What is the role of Colchicine in Autumn Crocus?

Does it diffuse into the soil and inhibit competitors?

Does it interfere with mitosis in the Crocus itself to slow down cell 
division whilst temperatures are reasonable for growth?

I'd be interested to know more.
