"Giant Higweed", formerly commonest woody plant in USA

The "Giant Hogweed" is HERACLEUM MANTEGZZIANUM Sommier & Levier.  It is
now widely naturalized all over Europe (Flora Europea).  Flora Europea
says that it is native to SW Asia, but the Flora of the USSR says that
it is endemic to the Caucasus.  For once, the Americas are innocent.
Also, the culpability of William Russell may be somewhat less than was 
inferred for its introduction.
