Note however that many plants depend on photoperiodic signals to induce
flowering. The two well known classes are short day plants (require
peroids of darkness longer than a certain {species or cultivar?
specific} time and long day plants which require peroids of darkness to
be shorter than a certain time to flower. There are _many_ other
permutations but the short story is that some plants (eg. many short
day plants) will not flower or will substantially delay flowering
without these signals.
