rain flattening prior to lodging

Does the repeated flattening and recovery of young crops by heavy rain
and wind result in adaptation of the crop to mechanical stress?

If it does, then the pattern of weather _prior_ to lodging may be as
important as the 'lodging' conditions at the time that damage occurs.

Has anyone published work on this?
