I'd like to thank everyone for the (many) helpful replies to this post.  For
interest's sake, the idea that came up the most was that of establishing a
possible relationship between surface area and weight, thereby enabling surface
area to be measured as a function of weight. 

Some of the methods proposed were ingenious to say the very least :-).  It's
nice to know that the potential for lateral thinking is by no means lost from
the scientific community!
