           DISTINGUISHED PROF. RICHARD W. POHL

            21 May 1916 ------ 3 September 1993

It is with sadness that we report the passsing of Distinguished
Professor Emeritus Richard W. Pohl, 77, on September 3rd, of
pneumonia.
Professor Pohl had been hospitalized for several months
preceding his death due to complications following back surgery.
His career of 46 years at Iowa State University enabled him to
become the preeminant authority on New World Grasses, particularly
in Central America. As a recognized expert on general grass
taxonomy, his contributions both in papers and books, as well as
through many graduate students in Agrostology will continue to
contribute to grass classification and conservation for many years
to come.
Dr. Pohl was a member of the Botanical Society of America, the
American Society of Plant Taxonomists [serving as Treasurer from
1959 to 1965, Member of the Council from 1965 to 1972, and as
President in 1973], and various honorary/scientific professional
societies. He also had established a very active botanical
exploration and conservation research program within Costa Rica,
and was honorary Curator of Grasses for the National Museum of Costa
Rica.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, three children, and six
grandchildren. Letters, comments, or contributions to the Richard
W. Pohl Fund (supporting graduate student research) may be directed
to: The Department of Botany, 353 Bessey Hall, Iowa State
