What no one seems to have mentioned yet is that, to eat Medlars, you should
leave them to achieve an interesting state of rottennness.  Here's
Shakespeare (As You Like It): "You'l be rotten ere you bee halfe ripe, and
that's the right vertue of the Medler."

They make a tasty preserve or jelly but beware the after-effects - an old
English name for them is Openers.  8->
