effect of methanol on C3 and C4

I recently saw a poster on this subject at a local conference.
Apparently, the carbon gain in C3 plants treated with MeOH is in
excess of the carbon supplied as MeOH i.e. the observed gain is
due to increased assimilation rather than use of MeOH itself as
carbon source. The results presented suggested that MeOH inhibits
the photorespiratory pathway in C3 plants. The absence of
photorespiration in C4 plants explains why MeOH has no effect in
this case.
Hope that helps!
