clay pots vs. ?

Hi,
I've only subscribed a short time, so I apologize
if this issue has been recently discussed. I am
getting ready to repot some house plants (ferns, brazillian
iris, spider plants), and if I remember correctly from
the old 4-H days, clay pots are preferable since they
"breathe". Is this the current convential wisdom? It
would seem that for an 8" pot and commercial potting
soil, the breathing rate of a clay pot might be unimportant.

Thanks,
-Jeff
