REQ: Info on Auto-Watering Devices

Hello!  I am working on a design project at the University of Toronto  and I    need some information on any self-watering/automatic-watering devices for
house plants.  I have found some information, but it is not very helpful.
Specifically, we are to create a low-tech solution for people that travel
often and leave (or leaf <--- HA HA) their plants alone for a few weeks.
