alvar, limestone pavement, glade

I am a graduate student studying alvars in southern Ontario, which are
flat, relatively treeless areas over limestone bedrock, with shallow
soils.  They are most often dominated by grasses, although Cedar trees and
Juniper shrubs can be common, hence they are called cedar glades in the
southeastern United States.
