Effect of Fungi on Shikonin production

I was reading an article on Shikonin production which said that if you add a
fungus culture to the Lithospermum culture then it will rapidly produce the
pigment. Apparently secondary  metabolites are produced in response to the
presence of pathogens.

Does anyone known any more about this ? (I am thinking of running a student
project on this)
