Hello-
My daughter and I collected seeds from the pods of some _beautiful_
lillys and irises that were growing on a 'century farm' in Iowa. What I/we
would like to know is the best way to germinate and grow flowers from these
seeds. They're only about 6 mo old, and have been kept in a cool, dark place
since we moved to MA. In particular, I would like to know a. Are these likely
to be viable? (recognizing that the preferred way of transplanting bulbous
plants is by digging and replanting the bulbs; nonetheless, because there
were several different varieties/colors growing in the same plot, I am eager
to see what might emerge from the cross(es)). b. I've heard that a period of
refidgeration might be useful in order to promote germination; is this a
general rule for plants, and/or flowering plants, or is it species specific?
Finally, I would like any advise on the best means of nurturing these
seeds- my gut feeling is to refridgerate a few days, then germinate between
a few layers of moist paper towels (kept in a moderately warm place), then
transplant seedlings to potting soil (and keep my fingers crossed).
Thanks in advance for your consideration; I'd appreciate it if all
relies could be to my email address so I don't miss them.
Scott W.
