chromosome counts

One of my activities is raising orchid species and hybrids from seed. To help 
with this I am checking the chromosome counts of those plants that might make
'good' parents. At present I am staining the root tip preparations with acid
orcein using a method I found in a rather out-of-date publication - the only
one I could find locally.

Does anyone know if there are other (?better) staining techniques for this 
purpose? I would be grateful for any information regarding this.
