A balanced fertilizer might be okay if you're growing the banana as a
houseplant. The Extension Service in Hawaii has publications regarding
growing bananas which recommend one that is high in potassium (similar to
what is sold as winterizer fertilizer for lawns where the K is four times
the N). This makes sense when you realize that banana fruit contains very
high amounts of potassium.
I don't know where you live, but even as far north as Birmingham, AL, we
can grow bananas outdoors as herbaceous perennials. Sometimes the plants
will even fruit. A south-facing, protected location is crucial. I dare
say that a potassium rich fertilizer also helps get bananas through the
winter.
