i find that botanical publications which include scientific names as well
as common names facilitate identification of a species.
in conversation, i usually refer to the common name of a plant because it
takes less time to say than the scientific name. i usually prefer "queen
palm" to "arecastrum romanzoffianum". the same is true when referring to
animal species. i prefer "osprey" to "pandion haliaetus".
