1. So long as you don't count beer as a chemical: bury a small container
(tuna can size) in the ground near the affected plants, deep enough so
slugs can easily get over the can rim. Partly fill the can with beer.
The little critters will come to drink and stay to drown.
2. Form a copper strip into a ring around the affected plant(s). Slugs
experience discomfort crawling over copper and will avoid doing so.
