Propogating Bay trees?

Hello Netters,
                          Does anyone know how Bay trees (i.e. the herb) are 
propogated? I have tried normal cuttings but without success. I have a lovely 
tree but it seems bound to die eventually and Bays always weem to be expensive 
to buy, presumably because they are difficult to propogate. Are those funny 
looking bud things that appear in autumn flowers? Are there seeds around. 
Forgive, my ignorance I am more of a cook than a botanist!
