The hand-held refractometers I am familar with will indicate the "total dissolved solids" in the juice or sap of a plant, and they're usually used on fruits to indicate the sugar content so the fruit can be harvested at the best time. I am not aware of other uses of them. There are stationary laboratory models that have better accuracy than the portable ones.
