Tulips

I Thought that someone was doing research at one stage into producing a 
particular colour of tulip.
Was this just heresay? If not is there any info on the state of the play.
My children are doing a school project and this info would be handy.
If this is not the right newsgroup, could you please point me in the right 
direction.
