help with unknown flower

Hello

This is the first time I've posted here and I'm not sure if it's quite the
right place so I'll keep it short.
A few years ago I was visiting a friend's place in Wash. state, & he had
growing a giant-sunflower-like plant 6-8 ft tall, but the flower head was
ENORMOUS- approx. 2+ feet in diameter.

Any idea what this may be?
