Certainly algae take carbon dioxide from water. An interesting aspect to 
follow is the effect they can have on pH by doing so. Carbon dioxide is 
one of the factors contributing to the pH balance and when 
photsynthetically active algae take it up the pH can shift quite a lot.
Try checking it out by measuring pH in dark and light conditions.
