Foliar feeding is usually only done in specialized situations, such as
iron deficiency, where the plant cannot get enough of a nutrient via root
uptake. It is also sometimes used in agricultural situations to give a
crop a "boost" or to prevent a nutrient deficiency. It is not very
efficient because leaves are not designed for absorption of nutrients,
the roots are.
