Cucumbers can consume oxygen and the value is more or less similar to the
rat. This measurement was done using a computerized Respirometer
(Micro-oxymax). The respirometer is highly sensitive and the system can be
operated in closed lood where the gas from the sample chamber (containing
cucumber) is circulated through the gas sensors and then returned to the
sample chamber. Micro-oxymax can also be operated in the open-flow mode.
This will allow measurement of samples with respiration rate that are too
high for the closed-loop mode. In this mode of operation, the fresh air is
passed through the measurement chamber and the oxygen and carbon dioxide
concentrations are measured at the input and the output of the chamber.
THIS IS ALSO VERY USEFUL IN DETERMINING THE DAMAGE OR BRUISING OF
VEGETABLES.
