I have a (kind of bizarre) question on the growth pattern of
palms, particularly Phoenix roebelenii (Pygmy Date Palm).
I grow mine outside in summer in partial shade. No direct sun
except at sunrise and sunset. Grows fine outdoors. In winter,
it comes inside with bright indirect light.
I've noticed that during growth indoors, all new shoots virtually fully
extend *before* they open up and fan out. Anywhere between 15 and 20
inches long, then they start to open. Kind of long spikes. Grows fine
indoors too.
However, outside the new shoots begin to fan out (open) at a much earlier
stage, perhaps between 8 and 10 inches.
The plant is very healthy and has increased in noticeable size since
I've had it (about 2 years). About 3 feet high, with about a 4 inch trunk.
It's doing it again this winter indoors. Just kind of different.
Can anyone give me a "biological" reason why it's growth pattern is
different?
