Two notes on this thread.  One thing to remember is that MgSO4 has a very
low osmotic coefficient, so that 100 mM MgSO4 has a lower osmotic pressure
than 100 mM NaCl.  This may end up making it look as though the osmotic
stress is less severe with MgSO4.  The other thing is that ammonium will
not only alter the pH as well, but it is also likely to be toxic at
concentrations sufficient to deliver a significant osmotic stress.
