Carolina Biological Supply sells Ecospheres, sealed glass globes
containing algae, shrimp, etc. that supposedly have been kept going for as
long as 8 or more years in low light at room temperature. Many terrariums
have been kept sealed for over a decade and in good order. BioSphere II
required tremendous energy inputs for refrigeration to keep it cool so
really was not input free. Supposedly, the biospherians also smuggled in
some food because their crop production was less than expected.
