Hi!
Inna nutshell, setting aside all "non-sporiferous" methods that ferns
use to survive:
Ferns don't "germinate themselves", their spores germinate into
prothallus/gametophyes which (typically) produce the sexual reproductive
cycle (and provide the ability to "evolve" the ensuing sporophyte).
