Are you referring to osage oranges? aka hedge apples?
aka ugly fruit?
fruit is are big bright green balls, with 'brain-like' folds.
if so, I think the latin name is Maclura. my understanding is
they were originally native to US southwest, grown by farmers
as fencing.
