Michael,

	For the last 15-20 years the northeastern states have been plagued by a 
similar disease. It has been identified as a fungus (Anthracnose 
spp..?). Planting resisant hybrids and Cornus kousa are viable 
alternatives. It seems to be worse during cool, damp Springs.
