Killing plants with ultra-violet ?

Hi - from a genuine layman. 

Can anyone tell me if ultra-violet light is effective in
killing or inhibiting the growth of mildew, molds or bacteria?

This would be in regards to walls in a rather wet enviorment.

Or for that matter, any type of light radiation?
