madagascar palm help!

A number of years ago I was given (according to them) a madagascar palm.
The plant is one very tall stalk covered in inch-long spines (ouch!) and
the top 5-6 inches of the plant are long (6-10 inch) leaves. At the time,
it was about 5 feet tall. Since then it has grown to almost 8 feet tall
and my ceilings are only 8 feet high. It is currently on my patio for the
summer, but I worry that it won't fit back in the house this fall!

My question is: Can I treat this plant like a succulent and cut it in
half, let the top part scar up and replant it? Will the bottom send out
new shoots? I have also never gotten it to bloom. Any tips?

Thanks!
